So why not plan a quick stop in the city of Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra, author of “Don Quixote de la Mancia”, a great source of inspiration to continental culture and literature?
Alcala de Henares is an attractive city on the banks of the Henares, only 31 km from Madrid. The name is of Arabic origin, meaning “citadel on the river Henares”.
Getting lost among its ancient lanes means taking a trip through the history and magic of the city’s ancient knowledge in its university – a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1998 – and historic buildings: the Cathedral of Santos Niños y Pastor, the Convent of Saint Ursula, the Colegio de Malaga, the Cervantes House and Museum, and the city’s theatre and walls.
Here even a lunch break is a unique opportunity: the Hostería del Estudiante is the perfect place to sample a traditional Castilian dish such as migas - bread friend in lard and served in terracotta bowls – garlic soup, roast, or "cocido" from Madrid, a soup made with chickpeas and meat.
Built in the 16th century and famous for its Trilingual Patio, this is the place where Hebrew, Latin and Greek were taught; characterised by timber beam ceilings and dark wooden stools covered with goatskin, still preserving all its timeless charm.
A pause for refreshments and a little history before going back to the future and to innovation in the kitchen!
